"The Hungry Traveler and breaking bread"

A hungry traveler meets 2 men with some bread.
The first man has 5 loaves, and the second man has 3 loaves.
The two men generously put their loaves of bread into the center, and then they split the bread equally (3 ways).
After the meal, the satisfied traveler reaches into his pocket and pulls out 8 coins to compensate the men... He hands the first man 5 coins and the second man 3 coins, and then he leaves...
Later, the traveler realizes that he had split the coins incorrectly and paid each man the wrong amount!
Why? How should the traveler have divided the 8 coins among the two men?
